書中描述作者從小時候心路歷程的成長。怎樣從一個大學經濟學教授, "down to earth"走到真正需求者面前，了解他們，幫助他們怎樣走出貧窮生活的枷鎖。由於當時孟加拉的傳統文化比較根深柢固，在貧窮的村落裡，女性不可以隨便與其他人談話。她們沒權，沒錢，沒地位，沒土地。有時候因為丈夫的拋棄，為了把家養起來，甚麼粗重活也幹，但還是三餐得不到溫飽，孩子一天比一天瘦。作者認知到世界上最貧窮的莫過於這些受社會欺壓的女性。所以作者以這些女性為目標，他和他的學生日以繼夜，努力不懈，不斷探訪這些充滿戒備心的窮人。最後終能打開她們家的門、心裡的隔莫，讓作者可以得以了解她們，並伸出援助的手。他透過小額貸款，幫助這些貧苦的人去做一些小生意，使得她們賺的錢可以足夠養活整個家庭，甚至有盈餘。共將她們帶離貧窮的谷底，甚至脫貧。由於作者以心以力的實行，不久之後他成立了GRAMEEN BANK，並向全世界推動這個脫貧的概念，亦在很多地方得以認同及實踐。

在我眼中YUNUS真的是一個偉大的人。他充滿光、熱和愛。我希望他的理念會有一天實現：「世界不在有貧窮，貧窮不在令我們受困。」
